The Highest Mountain in India

Kanchenjunga (more commonly spelt Kangchenjunga) is on the border between the Indian state of Sikkim, and Nepal. It rises to 8,586 metres (28,169 feet) above sea level, and is the third highest mountain in the world after Everest and K2.

The highest mountain that's entirely within India is Nanda Devi (7816 metres, 25,643 feet). This was the highest mountain in the British Empire, as Sikkim was classed as a 'princely state' and was not under direct British rule. After India gained independence (in 1947), Sikkim became a protectorate within the republic of India.
